
Introduction
Poplar DLR Depot is a light rail system that operates over a dedicated permanent way. This project required installing wheels stops within OMC Building at the end of the roads SA, SB, and SC. In addition to this, the embedded rail was to be replaced and the apron to be lowered down to eliminate trip hazards.
Our Involvement
IPS Designs and Consultancy was appointed to undertake feasibility studies through to detailed designs and installation of new wheel stops and to carry out Civil, Track, and Interface works.


Key Challenges
- Risk of train or vehicle overshooting the depot roads
- Protecting the block work wall which was immediately behind the roads from the risk of a train collision which may result in demolition of the wall.
Scope of work
- To replace existing wheel stops with the new wheel stops in Poplar Depot Carriage Shed roads SA, SB, and SC.
- Provide minor upgrade works to the concrete apron approach and carriage shed, improve the uneven surface, and to improve access to the rail for maintenance staff.
- To undertake pre-work surveys to establish the position of a new buffer stop.
- To install and commission a new wheel stops on each line and carrying out a wheel top risk assessment.
- To remove the rail from the depot approach tracks as they are not in a condition to repair or replace.
